Fatehpur Sikri was built by the Mughal emperor Akbar in the late 16th century. He decided to construct a new capital city after being blessed with a son, Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir), following his visit to the Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti. Construction of the city began around 1571, and it briefly served as the capital of the Mughal Empire.
The complex features many important structures like the Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, Panch Mahal and the tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti. The site is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
