The national flag of India was designed by Pingali Venkayya, a freedom fighter and agriculturist from Andhra Pradesh. He presented multiple designs for a national flag to Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders during the freedom movement. Over time, his design evolved into the tricolour flag we see today. After Independence, the final version was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 22 July 1947.

The flag consists of three horizontal stripes: saffron at the top (symbolising courage and sacrifice), white in the middle (representing peace and truth), and green at the bottom (signifying faith, fertility and prosperity). In the centre is the navy-blue Ashoka Chakra with 24 spokes, taken from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath.
