The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped zone around the edges of the Pacific Ocean, where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. It stretches along the coasts of countries such as Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Chile, Peru and the west coast of North America. This region sits on multiple tectonic plate boundaries, where plates are colliding, sliding or moving apart.

Because of this intense tectonic activity, the Ring of Fire contains around 75% of the world’s active volcanoes and experiences frequent earthquakes. Many of the world’s major tsunamis also originate in this region. For Geography exams, remember: Location – around Pacific Ocean, Feature – high volcanic and earthquake activity, Reason – tectonic plate boundaries. These three points cover most typical GK questions on the topic.
